AuriGen Medical is an Irish electrophysiology and structural heart company dedicated to transforming the management of longstanding persistent atrial fibrillation by developing the first cardiac implant to treat both the stroke and arrhythmia risk associated with this devastating condition.
AuriGen Co-founder Dr John Thompson & Director of Grants at Myriad, Marc Greatrex, had previously worked together on a successful grant application, with Marc having helped John & AuriGen successfully apply for Horizon 2020's SME instrument call back in 2018
Recognising the value that a successful grant bid writer brings to the application, Dr John approached Marc to help them prepare an application for Horizon 2020's Fast Track to Innovation funding call six months after they'd been granted their SME funding.
Dr John and the team recognised that Marc was not an expert in their area, so the team at AuriGen ensured they relayed the passion, enthusiasm and science behind their innovation to Marc and the grant bid writing team.
"The role of the grant writer is to take our information and make it easy for us to score as high as possible when the examiners assess it, and for us, it's been critical because it's very fine margins in terms of the competition."
AuriGen ranked 1st overall in Europe for the FTI funding call, and the company gained a lot of positive publicity from its success.
Their success opened doors to working with potential investors, business partners, and physicians and now, since their success, everyone wants to know their "secret sauce", with Dr John admitting that "first & foremost it's important to have a compelling business and be doing something important and secondly, you need a fantastic grant writer like Marc"
