Innovate UK, the government’s innovation agency has hired a new CEO: Indro Mukerjee.
Mukerjee is set to replace Ian Campbell, who has left him a fantastic legacy to build upon. But exactly who is he? Where did he come from? Why was he brought on board? And what will he do for the UK’s R&D and innovation industry while he’s at Innovate UK?
With an Oxford University degree in Engineering Science, Indro Muckerjee has always “had a strong personal passion for the journey from scientific discovery through to innovation and ultimately commercialisation of technology.” A journey which he has seen, first-hand, across many industries, countries and businesses.
A highly experienced CEO with experience in publicly listed, corporate multinational, new venture and private equity-backed tech and industrial companies, Indro has a strong interest in the development of industry-led skills and is committed to developing the best talent pipeline possible.
“He co-founded the UK Electronics Skills Foundation, which has developed into an innovative and successful partnership between industry and academia encouraging bright, young students to develop careers in the UK electronic systems industry.” – Gov.uk
Having worked at top tier, innovation-led businesses across all industries, Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng feels that there is no better person than Indro to lead the UK governments efforts to harness business-led innovation.
“I look forward to working closely with him at the helm of Innovate UK, which will be a crucial vehicle in accelerating business-led innovation and technology, driving economic growth, creating high-value jobs and cementing the UK’s status as a science superpower.” - Kwasi Kwarteng, Business Secretary at Innovate UK
Mukerjee’s primary focus will be to make sure that the government keeps its promise to increase R&D spending across the economy to 2.4% GDP by 2027.
But, alongside this, he’ll be looking to drive economic growth by working with companies to enable and support innovation, unleashing private sector investment into research and development and transitioning Innovate UK from a grant funding body to an agency.
He’ll be developing and implementing strategies for investments that promote the UK as a global leader in R&D and technologies of the future, whilst also cementing the UK’s place as a global science superpower.
The grant funding experts at Myriad Associates are looking forward to seeing where Indro takes his new position at Innovate UK. Read more about him here.
